What Are Keloid Scars?

Keloid is a type of scar that results from an overproduction of dense fibrous tissue stimulated by injury. Once formed, a keloid can gradually grow for months or years even after the wound has healed. Keloids are itchy, hairless and shiny, reddish or pinkish in colour and growing larger than the size of the original wound. Common areas that form keloid are the deltoid area, chest, earlobes and abdomen. For keloid-prone patients, a small injury can cause an aggressive scar formation leading to keloids.

Keloid Treatments in Malaysia

There are 4 main types of keloid treatments which include the following:

Laser Treatment

Larger keloids can be flattened by pulsed-dye laser sessions. This method is most effective in reducing itchiness and causing keloids to fade. Pulsed-dye laser therapy is performed over several sessions with 4 to 8 weeks between sessions. Your doctor may recommend combining laser therapy with cortisone injections. Possible side effects are hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation, blistering and crusting. These side effects will mainly affect people with darker skin.

Intralesional Steroid Injection

If you have a smaller keloid, the doctor may try to reduce its thickness by injecting it with cortisone or other steroids. You may need monthly injections for up to 6 months before the keloid scar gets flattened. Possible side effects of corticosteroid injections are skin thinning, spider veins and a permanent change in skin colour(hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation).

Cryotherapy

Small keloids can be reduced by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. However, repeat treatments may be required. Possible side effects are blistering, pain and loss of skin colour(hypopigmentation).

Surgical Removal

If your keloid does not respond to all other therapies, then the doctor may recommend surgery as a last resort. Surgery has a recurrence rate of 45% – 100%. So this method is the least helpful as the keloid scars are most likely to grow back even bigger in size than before.

Using a combination of treatments has been proven to be the most effective for treating keloids. So the doctor may combine laser treatment with steroid injection to treat your keloid more effectively. The combination of 2 types of treatments can inhibit excessive collagen production which is responsible for the formation of scar tissue. Furthermore, through the combined methods, the redness of the keloid can be greatly reduced too.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is keloid cancerous?

Keloids are not cancerous. Keloids are benign fibroproliferative dermal tumours as a result of abnormal wound healing process due to injury to the skin.

Does a keloid go away?

No, the keloid cannot go away. Apply silicone sheet or gel on the wound to increase hydration and decrease the risk of keloid formation during the wound healing process.

What happens if keloid is left untreated?

A keloid scar is harmless to your health but it can cause emotional distress especially if it is highly visible. So, prevention or early treatment is important.

Does removing a keloid leave a scar?

Keloid surgery can be used to remove your keloid scar. However, almost 100% of keloid scars return after surgery. The dermatologist may recommend other treatments such as laser therapy or steroid injections to reduce scarring.

What foods cause keloid scars?

Avoid eating acidic foods such as sour vegetables as these foods can affect the cell regeneration process. Sweet foods such as candies and soft drinks can also increase the risk of keloid formation.

Why do Asians get keloids?

Those who have a family history of keloids are usually more susceptible to getting keloids. This is most often seen in people of Asian or African descent.
